What is a fun fact about myself?
I enjoy writing poetry in my free time and may try to self-publish a chapbook of them!
What can you expect as my client?
I will work with you to understand your concerns from a whole-person perspective to foster growth and wellness in your connection to yourself and those around you. We will work together to imagine alternate ways of being with yourself and in your relationships. I incorporate strengths-based, trauma and culturally-informed approaches to offer a space of support and challenge for you and your loved ones to practice communicating and engaging with each other differently. My goal is to help you feel empowered to make different choices to ultimately feel more connected to yourself and your larger community.
Who am I outside of therapy?
I enjoy baking for friends and family, as well as going to various cafes and having coffee flights while reading a good romance or mystery novel.
How did I become a therapist?
Growing up, I was always fascinated about people and their relationships. When various family members were diagnosed with chronic illnesses during my adolescence, we were left uncertain how to navigate adjusting to them while balancing other life demands. These experiences led me to pursuing a master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy and getting my PhD in Medical Family Therapy.
I hold a PhD in Medical Family Therapy from East Carolina University. I received specialized training about helping individuals, their partners, and their families adjust to a new acute or chronic illnesses diagnosis such as chronic pain or diabetes while also feeling empowered in their interactions with healthcare providers. I also have received additional training in EMDR, EFT, and Brainspotting.
As a marriage and family therapy associate, I have worked at outpatient health clinics, a high school/early college, and a private practice with teens, adults, intimate partners, and families on navigating life transitions due to acute or chronic illnesses, familial conflict, identity exploration, or difficulties with communication and intimacy in their intimate relationships. My research interests include providing LGBTQ+ affirming care, weight-inclusive care, and positive body image.
Currently, I am prioritizing working with intimate relationships across sexual, romantic, and relational orientations, as well as families from the Global Majority and LGBTQ+ community who are wanting to feel more connected to themselves and each other and/or partners and families navigating changes in their lives due to chronic illnesses. I will also work with individuals who are wanting to further their healing journey through EMDR.
